Alternative Heartworm Medications?
"http://www.heartwormsociety.org" is the web site for heartworm information from the experts, their own site as a matter of fact. If you look under the "Veterinary Resource" tab you'll see all the information you need to know about heartworm.
My question has anyone used a different method to administer medications other then Heartgard? I personally had a solution made for my 4 Doxies created from Ivermectin (Active ingredient in Heartgard).
Now I know a lot of people do not have a Degree in Bio/Chem like I do, so I am able to measure out correct dosages without any concerns. What offends me, is that knowing the life stage of the heartworm; I only need to administer a dosage every 6 months to keep my Doxies clean here in NYC. I actually prefer to dose my Doxies every 3 months to be on the safe side, again with the temperature drop below 57 degrees for just 1 night; the heartworm cycle is halted.
So what I am asking is if I only spent 21 cents for an 8 dose solution, why are we being charged so much at the vets offices and online for heartworm preventative? Again I only spent "10 & 1/2 CENTS" last night to administer preventative for my 4 Doxies.
Has anyone ever asked their vet to have a solution made from the local pharmacy that can safely do the same job as Heartgard? Or do you have an alternative method I am unfamiliar with to help me out? I do not use any preservatives in my Doxies, so my solution only lasts for 90 days (2 dosages), where online you can purchase these solutions for longer periods of time.
Just throwing out a little knowledge and information to curb the costs of animal care and health.
