Yes!!!
(read)
My vet sells a liquid solution just like you are describing and he gave my husband ( a pharmacist) the recipre he uses. It is so much cheaper than Heartguard. I run a rescue and it is prohibitive financially to give 17 or more doses of Heartguard a month. This is cheap and just as good.
I think vets use this to make the rent payment! This and flea treatments which I personally believe kills some small dogs.
They caution patients to buy and use this monthly. Its not healthy for small dogs!!

How to Dose..
I dose my Doxies every 3 months. You do not need to give this medication on a monthly schedule. The life cycle of heartworm actually dictates it (When ever the temperature hits 57 Degrees - HEARTWORM Dies In Its Carrier, the mosquito).
You will also hear vets state that they do not recommend during the winter months...
