New Doxie Parents
Hello all. Hope everyone is being safe during these crazy times that we're all going thru.
My girlfriend and I, who are new homeowners and currently working from home for the time being just adopted a new Dachshund 2 days ago. He's a beautiful 3, almost 4 year old that we named Henrik. We drove 6 hours to pick him up and he was very good in the car on the long 6 hour drive home.
We got him from a breeder, although Henrik has never bred with another dog before. He was very much loved by and attached to his previous owner, but she did let us know of a traumatizing incident that happened when Henrik was younger. There was some construction being done on their property when Henrik got loose, and was chased by 5 or 6 adult men who tried to catch him. He was caught but seems to have been a bit reserved ever since. The previous owner told us from the start that because of this, he is much more comfortable with females.
He's been with us for 2 days now and we are constantly showing him love and affection. We love him and want to do anything we can to let him know that he is loved, safe, and protected. He has slept in our bed the last 2 nights also, because he doesn't want to stay in the crate we bought him. The previous owner said that is where he eats and sleeps. He is very much attached to my girlfriend, which is obviously totally fine because if that is what makes him feel safe, we want him to feel that way.
What I want to ask the forum members is how long you think Henrik will start to feel more comfortable in his new him and surroundings. He's very comfortable with my girlfriend, but will he become more comfortable with me too, and will he become a bit more independent in terms of just walking around the house and relaxing on his own? We know it's only been 2 days and we know we must be patient, but we just wanted to get some advice from people who may be able to help us out. We're both first time dog parents.
Thanks for any help you can provide!
