Desi is 8 tears old; born October 24, 2004. I had lost my mother on November 24, 2003 and was completely lost and shut myself off from the world. We'd had dachshunds when I was a kid until I was in high school (late 60s) but no pets since then. In December, I randomly picked up the Pennysaver and looked for dachshund ads. I called a breeder in Riverside and left a few messages but didn't hear back. With the holidays, it wasn't surprising and I just let it go. Two days prior to Christmas, at about 10:30 pm, the breeder called because she said I was the only one who had called twice and sounded so sincere about my desire for a dachshund. The entire litter had originally all been spoken for, however she had just been contacted by a woman who was supposed to pick up the last one on Christmas Eve. She said her husband had just surprised her with a cruise and they'd be gone for several weeks; she didn't think it would be fair to leave a pup during the bonding process, etc., so she asked the breeder if she could find someone else for her choice and she'd get another one from an upcoming litter. So... it was all just meant to be! She was going to be visiting her sister in Orange on Christmas Eve (the next day) and we made arrangements for me to meet this little guy. I hesitated only because I had wanted a girl to name after my mother, but I couldn't ignore all of these 'signs' that he was supposed to be mine! When I arrived, this little bundle of black fur with a red collar came strutting out of the house like he owned the joint, and it was love at first sight... for me, anyway! I was still nervous but talked with the breeder and we agreed on a week long trial period. I had no idea of a name other than I wanted it to begin with a 'D'. Just then, his mother came outside and I was introduced to Lucy McGillicuddy. Bolt of lightning! My handsome black bundle was named Desi Arnaz right then and there!! We've been inseparable ever since... and he saved my life. Alone, I wasn't sure I wanted to go on, but he gave me the will to live again. Thirteen months to the day after losing Mom, I'd brought home my new best friend. He was spoiled rotten then and remains so until this day! I went back to the same breeder about nine months later to get a little girl... well, that's another story for another time! (Hint: I have three wienies now!)

Here is Desi, in all his glory, with his genetic niece and nephew. Dot is primarily chocolate and Dash is the speckled pup... happy pups, happy Mommy!

So glad to see a handsome boy like you as DOTD. I love your shiny black coat. A lot has happened at my house since our last visit. I now have 3 adopted dachshunds and 1 adopted Pom. Enjoy your special day of fame.(Herbie's mom)
