Back history:
Mid-august 2010. we left for vacation and left our Black and tan doxie and his sister (rat terrier) at home with our usual dog sitter. He got sick the night before we came home from our week-ish long vacation. we took him to the vet the day we got home. They said he was very sick but nothing was really wrong with him. they gave him fluids and some shots and sent him home. He was scheduled for another visit the next morning. He passed away in his sleep. He died at the age of 14, of unknown (old age most likely) causes. we adopted his sister from the pound when she was 1. When she was three we brought him home from the pound, he was also three years old.
a few days later.... we decided as a family that the best way to deal with the lose of our beloved fam. member was to fill the empty space in the house with a new pup (this should NOT read: "we replaced our dog".). it is a hard choice to make. prior to our doxie passing away i had frequently talked of getting him a puppy to play with since he was still very very active and old (and therefore in my mind lonely and in need of extra attention ;) ).
the rest of the fam. did not want a third dog, so we didn't get one.

Skamper's story:
so I went with my dad to see if the local petshop (which is actually a really decent place, clean cages, fed holistic food, vet checks, meds/dewormers, and vaccines) had a doxie. I fell in love with the doxie personality and the typical temperament fit what i was looking for in a dog. We mistook the one doxie they had for a terrier (we couldn't see his face). after asking if they had a doxie and having his cage pointed out to us we were over joyed. I crossed my fingers and prayed it was a boy. Turns out it was a little boy.
He looks like our old doxie in the face but has the body coloring of our still living girl dog. we joke that if the two had had puppies this is what they would have looked like.
During the school year he stays with my parents because my school residence does not allow dogs. I say it's gonna give him a change to attach to the rest of the family. <3 I still miss my son though!

He's gotten bigger.
I am sure he has. I think he is going to be a standard.... ><# oh, no. i was hoping for a mini!

Congratulations Skamper

You make a handsome DOTD. I think the memorial to your Mom's previous boy is very thoughtful. I am sure by now you have grown into a very handsome young man. Hope to see some more pictures soon. Best wishes to you and your family. May you always know love, kindness, good health and understanding. Extra treats for you.
