The Patriarch (1959-1966)
Moochie (AKC name: Baron von Heyde) was the first in a looooooooooooong line of Dachshunds who have entertained our family through the years. This picture was taken on July 4, 1960, at the Eagle River Camp Ground near Anchorage, Alaska.

Moochie
Favorite food: People food. When he was hungry, he would pick up his dish in his mouth and bring it to his designated feeder.
Favorite treat: Ice Cream Cones!
Favorite toy: A old sock with a knot tied in it.
Favorite spot to sleep: Under the covers (of course) of my bed.
Archenemy: Service Station Attendants! From the front seat he could lunge out the window at an unsuspecting attendant in a heartbeat!

MoochiesMommy writes:
Our beautiful Dachsie came to us on a snowy day in Fairbanks, Alaska, in late winter (March) of 1959, as payment of a debt. Daddy, an extraordinarily talented mechanic, had rebuilt the engine in a friend's car. When it came time to settle up, Friend was a little short on cash, but he did have a litter of AKC Dachshunds that were just the right age...would he like one for his kids? Daddy looked down into a cardboard box Friend was holding and picked up a little wiggly black and tan puppy. Sure, he said, why not?
From that day forward, Moochie was a member of our family. His greatest joy was to ride in the car. Back in those days, the front seat was the bench type and there weren't any head rests. The top of that bench seat was just the right width for him to lay on. His favorite position was to lay across the top of the seat with his head on the shoulder the person who was driving. He traveled for THOUSANDS of miles that way, because every summer we would drive from Alaska to Washington State and back.
Moochies favorite stop was the A & W Drive-In where Daddy would buy us all (Moochie, too) ice cream cones. He was a great little camper and went on all our summer fishing trips, even hiking several miles back into the Alaskan woods on more than one occasion. Before he was a year old, he swam in the Yukon River. In the winter he loved to play in the snow. Minus 30 degrees? He didn't care. He would dive into a snow bank head first. We practically had to drag him inside.
Our circumstances changed and the Mooch moved from Alaska with us. For a time, he lived with our Seattle cousins and bonded with them as his family, too. Then, in the spring of 1963, he moved with us to the Mojave Desert. Moochie perceived the desert as hostile territory; you could see it in his eyes. His dream was to return to Alaska. The desert sapped his strength and in the end a snake was his undoing.
When I picture Moochie at The Rainbow Bridge, he's frolicking in the snow - or having an ice cream cone with my brother, Earl, who met him at The Bridge in June 2001.

smoochies to moochie!
What a wonderful picture.. just love it! I met my first doxie in 68.. this first of many in my life! Next a boyfriend in HS, one at my first job, then finally I got my OWN! Prima was a delight, like you.. stole my heart forever, too! She lost her battle at 4.5 years, too soon also. But she remains in my heart like your family does, maybe you and Prima are having car rides together at RB. You'd of liked her... Hugs to your family and Happy Easter! Our mama has us now, Love Roxy and Winnie
