Emmitt was an accident, so to speak. My second dachshund was supposed to be a long haired....but when I went for one of my bonding sessions with the little girl puppy I spotted Emmitt and something immediately told me I had to have him--that this was my dog. So, I told the breeder that I wanted to get him instead. Many of my friends and coworkers agree that finding Emmitt happened for a reason......shortly after I got him my "nurse gut" told me something was wrong with him. He wasnt gaining weight, he wasnt bonding, he was always distracted. After several vet visits I insisted that someone take a closer look. On the last visit, the vet took one look at him and asked to take him to the back. I was in tears. It turns out he had a bad case of "puppy strangles," when the immune system starts attacking the "self." Had we not caught it in time he would not have gotten better. It took alot of medications, alot of special diet concoctions, and vet visits but I nursed him back to health and since then he is attached to mama at the hip. Simply put, the sun rises and sets with mom! He continues to sleep curled up into my stomach at night under the blankets like he did when he was sick. He is the funny man of the three, a comic, an athlete. He is also our emotional guy, gets his feelings hurt, and will readily express his emotions to you if you give him the ear. He loves a good tummy rub if you make eye contact, and hates when the other dogs run from him and he has to chase!
